Market Update June 22 2010 Market

June 21, 2010

Packer Orchards brought a happy surprise last week with their first cherries. They will have a lot more this week along with cookies, hand pies and jams. Unger Farms will have a mix of Albion and Hood strawberries. Greenville Farm will have raspberries and Shuksan strawberries while Radicle Pastures will be bringing certified organic Totem strawberries. Rick Steffen Farm will have a wide selection of fruits and vegetables including kohlrabi, chard, spinach, onions, and a variety of berries. Osmogaia is taking this week off. The ground is finally dry enough to plow.

As for prepared foods, Little Pots and Pans should be bringing more Strawberry Basil Goat Cheese Tarts. It was quite a hit at all the markets last week. (Full disclosure – I’ve eaten 3 in the past week.) They should have Spring Pea w/Pistou (French Basil Pesto) Soup as well. Bigfoot Bakery will be out this week due to illness but expects to be back next week.

With all the berries finally coming in, it’s easy to buy more than you can eat. Cooking Up A Story, an online television show and blog about people, food, and sustainable living located in Oregon, has a great video post called Small Batch Strawberry Jam. Marge Braker of Portland Preserve demonstrates how to make strawberry jam. You can find the recipe here (link) and watch the video below.
