Market Update September 21 2010

September 20, 2010

It’s just one day away from the Autumnal Equinox. The weather, however, seems to have gotten a jump start to fall with the rain and cool nights. The harvest at the market will shift with the season. Blueberries and blackberries are finished for the year. You may find small quantities this week but that’s about it. The day neutral strawberries, mostly Albions and Seascapes, will be available. With luck, there should be strawberries until the second week in October. Lettuce, arugula and other greens will do just fine in this weather. Wild mushrooms like lobster, matsutake and chanterelle mushrooms should be readily available. Peaches and nectarines should be around a few more weeks. As for apples and pears, this is their season. You would normally see a lot of winter squash coming into the market now but all those wet days in May and June delayed plantings for most farms. You’ll see winter squashes like acorn, delicata, and butternut coming in soon.

Vendor update – Kris Sampson is coming to the market this Tuesday. She will have fresh and smoked salmon. Bigfoot Bread will be back this week too.

While the Thursday session ends on September 30th, the Tuesday market will continue weekly through the winter. Nearly all the Thursday only vendors (Sulina and Bay’s Farm, Ammie’s Goodies, Nectar Coffee and The Hummus Stop) will move to Tuesday for the winter. Osmogaia will be returning in the fall too but I don’t have a start date yet. I’ll keep you posted.

Here’s the vendor rundown for this Tuesday:
