Market Update November 2 2010

November 1, 2010

Daytime temperatures are still OK so you should find tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and a few other summer items this week. Greenville Farm’s pepper roaster will be back. There will be a nice selection of winter squash tomorrow. Wild mushrooms (lobster, matsutake and chanterelle (white and yellow) mushrooms should be readily available as well. Nature’s Choice may or may not have chestnuts tomorrow. It hasn’t been a good year for chestnuts, wild or cultivated. But Bill should have wild watercress and several kinds of sprouts and micro-greens. Rick Steffen Farm should have chard, spinach, carrots, beets, potatoes and peppers. The farm will also have their harvest wreathes and bouquets like the one on the left.

Vendor update –

Unger Farms and Xiong Farmer are finished for the year. Both will be back next June. We have a new vendor starting tomorrow – Meadow Harvest Farm (link) from Nehalem, Oregon. Brian Tallman and Sage Walden raise Murray Grey beef cattle and Targhee and Texel sheep. Their beef is dry aged 14 days or more, the lamb 7 days. Dry-aging reduces the water weight in the meat and gives the naturally occurring enzymes time to tenderize the meat. Stop by their stall and learn more about their farm. You can also read about Brian and Sage in the most recent Edible Portland. We have copies at the market and you can find the article online at edibleportland.com.
